Motivation is a fickle beast. It takes just the smallest change, the most insignificant comment to build motivational spirit. In fact, off the top of my head, I could recite 5 one liners that could singlehandedly supercharge certain individuals into action. Sometimes it’s that simple. Unfortunately, this principle also applies to a negative mindset as well – some people are masters of destroying their own pursuits before they’ve even begun.

One of the most common destructive phrases I hear is ‘everyone is doing it’. This is often used to justify a lack of action, people convince themselves an idea isn’t worth pursuing just because there’s competition. They convince themselves that they can’t compete, that there’s no space for them and as a result, end up doing nothing. This is madness for a few reasons.

1. If you look, you will find

Let’s face facts, there are very few business ideas out there that haven’t been done before. That’s just a reality. If you look into any industry, you will find other companies doing their thing. So when you’re conducting your initial research, you’re likely to bump into these companies. But, let’s get one thing straight, if you’re scoping out the sector you’re planning to enter, of course you’re going to see more competition than the average consumer. It’s natural to find competitors wherever your look because if you weren’t, then you wouldn’t be doing your research thoroughly enough.

2. ‘Everyone is doing it’ is a guilt free excuse

Finding an excuse NOT to start can be tough, but moving the blame off of your shoulders and onto uncontrollable market factors gives you an easy out, and helps you to avoid taking responsibility for your lack of action. After all, it’s safer to not start, than to fail, right?

[ctt_author author=”603″ name=”@gregdorban” template=”1″ link=”I5L9H” via=”yes” ]You saying everyone is doing it, is just your excuse for not. Nothing more. Own it and do it, better. #mindset #growth[/ctt_author]

3. There are 7 billion people on the planet, EVERYONE isn’t doing it

Always consider the scope of opportunity in front of you, even if many people are experiencing success, they’re just proof that it can be done. Remember success breeds success, if lots of people are achieving in your target sector, why can’t you? It’s easy to forget, there are 7 billion people on the planet, there is always demand for something.

4. There’s ALWAYS space for the best

If others are successful in the space you want to compete, then don’t see it as an excuse to give up. See it as an opportunity to iterate on their success. If you’ve got perspective on what good looks like before you begin, you’ll have a clear understanding of what it is you need to do to win. If you can differentiate from the competition from the outset, then you already have a competitive advantage.

Every company in the world started small, it all begins with an attitude to achieve. Don’t let your fear undermine your abilities, it’s better to try, fail and learn (and then go again), than it is to never try at all. Regret is the greatest tragedy in life. Don’t let it rule your future, take control of your life outcomes today.
